TURKEY - Pamukkale

Pamukkale (means "cotton castle" in Turkish) is a natural site near Denizli in southwestern Turkey with a set of bizarre calcium cliff bathing pools overlooking the town of Pamukkale. The city contains hot springs and travertines, terraces of carbonate minerals left by the flowing water which have a very high mineral content (notably chalk). The calcium and hydrogen carbonate react to create calcium carbonate (also called travertine) and limestone. This is what gives Pamukkale its whiteness and created the pools. These petrified waterfalls and travertines are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The roman city of Heriapolis is located on the hill of Pamukkale.
