PERU - Arequipa

Arequipa is the colonial-era capital of Peru’s Arequipa Region. The old city is filled with baroque buildings constructed from sillar, a white volcanic stone. Its historic center is anchored by the Plaza de Armas, a  main square flanked on its north by the 17th-century neoclassical Basilica Cathedral. The historical center of Arequipa is listed as World Heritage by UNESCO.
The stunning Monastery of Saint Catherine (Spanish: Santa Catalina) is a monastery (or covent) founded in 1530 and still inhabited by 30 Domenican nuns. The over 20,000-square-meter monastery is characterized by its vividly painted walls. The foundress of the monastery was a rich widow, Maria de Guzman. The tradition of the time indicated that the second son or daughter of a family would enter a life of service in the Church, and the monastery accepted only women from upper class Spanish families. Each family paid a dowry at their daughter's admission to the monastery.
