FRENCH GUIANA  (France)    Saint Laurent du Maroni

Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni is a border town located on the Maroni River , opposite the town of Albina in Suriname which can be reached by ferry or pirogue. It is the second most populous city of French Guiana with 41,00 inhabitants and was founded in 1858. It was formerly the arrival point for prisoners, who arrived at the Camp de la Transportation. The prisoners (including the famous Papillon) arrived there for processing.
