Guayaquil s located on the western bank of the Guayas River, which flows into the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Guayaquil. This busy city is the largest and the most populous, with around 2.8 million people in the metropolitan area, as well as the nation's main port. It's the main hub to fly to Galapagos.Guayaquil has been founded in 1538 by Spanish Conquistador Francisco de Orellana. On October 9, 1820, Guayaquil became the first city in Ecuador to gain its independence from Spain.In the last decade, the city has undergone positive change. The beautiful riverfront promenade "Malecon 2000" , green areas and modern shopping arcades all over the city attracts tourism from inside and outside the country.
