Ouro Preto is not the only city with a rich heritage, the towns of Congonhas, Mariana, Tiradentes, Sao Jao del Rei.. deserve a visit.
Congonhas (Congonhas do Campo) is a historical town and a former capital of Minas Geiras state. The city is known for its 18th century basilica - the Santuário do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos - and associated soapstone sculptures. It was created by Aleijadinho, one of the best artists in the baroque style in the world. In 1985 the Sanctuary was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Mariana is the oldest city in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is a tourist city, founded on July 16, 1696, with its baroque churches, buildings and museums. It was the first capital of Minas Gerais.
Sao Joao del Rei is a historical city with much 18th-century architecture and Tiradentes is a charming village with the beautiful Santo Antonio Church from the 18th century. Built in the 18th century on a high land. Incredible, but 500 kilogrammes of gold were used to decorate the church.
