The Puna de Atacama or Atacama Plateau is an arid high plateau with an elevation averages of 4,500 metres (14,800 ft) above sea level.
In Argentina, Puna's territory is extended in the provinces of Salta, Jujuy and western Catamarca. Between the 2 ranges of mountains : the Occidental Range with higher volcanic peaks, and the Oriental Range, lower and of tectonic origin, but some peaks are over 6000 meters. This plateau or Puna is an endorheic basin with virtually no rain. The precipitations that do fall, as snow, on the summits of the surrounding peaks drain into the many Puna 'pockets' dragging minerals and creating at the bottom of each an assortment of salt flats.
