ETHIOPIA - Lalibela
This rural town of Lalibela (also Lalibella) is known around the world for its 11 monolithic rock-cut churches, which were built during the reign of Lalibela, king of Ethiopia.
He sought to recreate Jerusalem, and structured the churches landscape and religious sites in such a way as to achieve such a feat. “The churches at Lalibela are clustered in two major groups, one representing the earthly Jerusalem, and the other representing the heavenly Jerusalem.
Lalibela is one of Ethiopia's holiest cities and is a center of pilgrimage for much of the country and the churches have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978.
