Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch (lake) extending for approximately 37 kilometres (23 miles) southwest of Inverness. Loch Ness is best known for alleged sightings of the cryptozoological Loch Ness Monster, also known affectionately as "Nessie". Fort Augustus is a town at the south west end of Loch Ness, well known for the locks on Caledonian Canal.
Urquhart Castle sits beside Loch Ness and played a role in the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century. The   present ruins date from the 13th to the 16th centuries, though built on the site of an early medieval fortification.
Glen Affric is a glen south-west of the village of Cannich which is located at 15 miles of the Loch Ness and is very popular for its landscapes, wildlife and trekkings.
