Belem (near Lisbon)

On the banks of the River Tagus, the Tower of Belém stands as a symbol of the Portuguese Discoveries and the foundation of the Modern Age. For this reason, UNESCO has added it to the list of World Heritage sites.
Built in the 16th century, the Monastery of Jerónimos is an impressive example of Manueline architecture and is a World Heritage site.
The Monument to the Discoveries stands on the northern bank of the Tagus River estuary. Located along the river where ships departed to explore and trade with India and Orient, the monument celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery  during the 15th and 16th centuries.
