Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples and was mostly destroyed and buried under meters of ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, killing around 3,000 people. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Pompeii and Herculaneum are ancient cities which have been preserved in detail, everything from jars and tables, to paintings and people were frozen in time.
