Valletta is the capital city of the island nation of Malta and was one of the earliest sites inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage list.
Valletta preserves much of its 16th century architectural heritage built during the rule of the Order of St. John also known as Knights Hospitallers. The city is essentially Baroque in character, with elements of mannerist, neo-classical and modern architecture in selected areas.
Valletta is the island's principal cultural centre and has a unique collection of churches, palaces, museums and narrow streets.
