The construction of the ancient city of Rhodes began in 407 BC and is now the capital of the island. In 1988 the Medieval City of Rhodes was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes is a medieval castle and was previously a citadel of the Knights Hospitaller that functioned as a palace, headquarters and fortress.
