Marseille (Marseilles) has a complex history. It was founded by the Phoceans in 600BC and is one of the oldest cities in Europe. Boasting an atypical beauty and a character of steel, Marseille is home to centuries of history, an-ever changing and fascinating atmosphere and a very special way of life.
The Frioul archipelago is a group of four islands located off the Mediterranean coast of France, approximately 4 kilometres (2 miles) from Marseille. Frioul consists of two main islands, Ratonneau and Pomègues, connected by a dyke and are famous for a variety of paths which make it an ideal place for walkers. Also it's a paradise for and swimmers and underwater divers. The If island is between Frioul and Marseille and is famous for the Château d'If , in fact a fortress (later a prison). This place was used by Alexandre Dumas in a book : the count of Monte-Cristo
