FRANCE - French Riviera

Cannes - Iles de Lerins

Cannes is the "star" of the French Riviera, famous for the International Film Festival and the glitzy hotels, cars, beaches and visitors attracted here.
The city of Cannes is centered around the old port, with the central part quite compact. The famous "Croisette" is the boulevard and the beach that extends around the bay to the east of the port, in the protected "Rade de Cannes".
The "Iles de Lérins" is a small archipelago just off the coast of Cannes. The Ile Sainte Marguerite is the larger island and is covered by a lovely forest of Allepo pine and eucalyptus. From the port area there is a short walk to the Fort Royal where you can see the now-bare little cell where the Man in the Iron Mask was incarcerated.
Saint Honorat, the smallest of the two Lerins Islands is named after Saint Honoratus who established an abbey here in the year 410.
