FINLAND - Helsinki
Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is situated by the Baltic Sea with a 100-kilometre-long shoreline and around 300 islands.
Finland has been for a long time a swedish territory and Sweden’s King Gustavus Vasa founded Helsinki on the mouth of Vantaanjoki River in 1550 to compete with Tallinn for Baltic Sea trade.
After the russian conquest, Finland became independent in 1917, and Helsinki assumed the demanding new role of capital of the young republic. A third of this laid-back and compact city is covered in green areas with great possibilities for outdoor activities and relaxing. On the other hand, the score of urban events, museums, restaurants, bars and nightclubs make Helsinki a vibrant capital.
