Split is the second-largest city of Croatia after the capital Zagreb, the largest city in Dalmatia and the largest city on the Croatian coast. Split is an intraregional transport hub and popular tourist destination, the city is linked to the Adriatic islands and the Apennine Peninsula. n 1979, the historic center of Split was included into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
Diocletian's Palace was built at the end of the third century AD as a residence for the Roman emperor Diocletian, and today forms about half of the old town of Split.
