FRANCE - Corsica - Corte

Corte is a small town in the heart of Corsica and was the capital of the island (from 1755 to 1769). As well as being an interesting town in itself, Corte is ideally located for exploring the mountains, valleys and landscapes of central Corsica and the surrounding natural park. Your first sight will be the spectacular citadel situated atop a rocky outcrop and around. Don't forget to step up to the nearby observation deck which offers excellent views not only of the citadel and the city, but also of the surrounding mountains. Much of Corte's appeal to visitors is its location and easy access to stunning scenery. The region is part of the Corsica Natural Park and you can drive on narrow scenic roads to appreciate the scenery. Or find a walk at your level of fitness and enthusiasm, and it all will put you in touch with the "wild side" of Corsica. For serious hikers, you might consider the challenging and renowned GR20. A few kilometers from Corte, you can cross the Gorges de la Restonica for an easy walk or not and bathe in a freshwater pool.
