
BULGARIA - Sofia
Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria and largest city with nice parks, historic landmarks and architectural monuments. The city’s churches, mosques and buildings reflect more than 2,000 years of history, including Greek, Roman, Ottoman and Soviet occupation. Roman-built, 4th-century Rotonda Saint George church has medieval and Ottoman decoration dating back to the 10th century.
Located on the outskirts of Sofia, Boyana Church was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. The eastern church was built in the 10th century, then enlarged at the beginning of the 13th century. The frescoes in this second church, painted in 1259, make it one of the most important collections of medieval paintings. The ensemble is completed by a third church (19th century).
