BELGIUM - Bruges (Brugge)

​Bruges is a town in Flanders, the northern part of Belgium. The most visited city in Belgium is also known as the "Venice of the North" due to its numerous canals which cross through and circle around the town, and can be visited by boat. Relatively cosmopolitan and bourgeois given its compact size, it is one of the best preserved pre-motorised cities in Europe and offers the kind of charms rarely available elsewhere. Bruges is a postcard perfect stop on any tour of Europe.The town flourished in the Middle Ages, achieving the status of city around 1128. Bruges has managed to maintain the splendour of its medieval architectural heritage, the centre is classified a World Heritage Site by Unesco. It is known for its Gothic brick buildings and for being the birthplace of primitive Flemish art.
