During the Nara period, Nara was the capital of Japan, and the Emperor lived there before moving the capital to Kyoto.
Nara's deer are the symbols of the city, and are famous across Japan. In the past, deers were thought of as sacred animals--the helpers of gods--and have been carefully protected for many years. Even today, Nara's deer are carefully protected as "natural monuments. Deers aren't shy, specially if you carry food, and they are very closed to visitors, so follow the advices to avoid any problem as they are wild animals.
