The first national parks of Japan were established in 1931, with the aim of preserving the natural beauty of the coastal and mountainous areas. At present, there are 34 national parks all over Japan, and six of them are in Hokkaido.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shiretoko National Park is considered as one of the most splendid national parks of Japan. This remote peninsula is home to imposing brown bears, which can be seen while on a sightseeing trip by boat during the warmer months.
