JAPAN - around Hiroshima

Miyajima - Itsukushima sanctuary

Miyajima was a town located on the island of Itsukushima near Hiroshima.
The centuries-old Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima is the source of both the island's fame and its name. The Itsukushima shrine is known worldwide for its iconic "floating" torii gate.
The shrine and its torii gate are unique for being built over water, seemingly floating in the sea during high tide. The shrine complex consists of multiple buildings which are connected by boardwalks and supported by pillars above the sea. A torii  is a traditional Japanese gate most commonly found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrine, where it symbolically marks the transition from the mundane to the sacred.
