INDIA - Kolkata
Kolkata (formerly called Calcutta) is the multicultural and cosmopolitan capital of West Bengal, and one of the largest cities in India. Till 1912, Kolkata was the capital of India, when the British moved the capital city to Delhi. Kolkata is an 'in your face' city that shocks and charms the unsuspecting visitor. Love it or hate it, you definitely won't forget the city on the Hooghly river bank. Kolkata has many buildings adorned with Indo-Islamic and Indo-Sarasenic architectural motifs. Several well-maintained major buildings from the colonial period have been declared "heritage structures"; however, others are in various stages of decay.
