Hampi (or Hampe) is a village in northern Karnataka on the southern bank of the river Tungabhadra and was one of the richest and largest cities in the world during its prime. It was the seat of the mighty Vijayanagara Empire (1336-1565) which extended from the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal and from the Deccan Plateau to the tip of the Indian Peninsula. The Hampi village is located within the ruins of the city of Vijayanagara and continues to be an important religious centre, housing the Virupaksha Temple and several other monuments belonging to the old city.
