INDIA - Andaman Islands
Great Andaman Island
Great Andaman is the main archipelago of the Andaman Islands of India. It comprises five major islands, including South Andaman where the capital city is located. Port Blair will be very probably your gateway to the Andaman Islands.
In 1789, the government of Bengal established a naval base and penal colony on Chatham Island in the southeast bay of Great Andaman. The settlement is now known as Port Blair The penal colony in the Andamans was abolished after the British recaptured the islands from Japanese occupation during World War II. India took over the administration of the Andamans in 1947 when it gained independence.
