KAZAKHSTAN
Mangistau Peninsula -
Scherkala - Karagie
Whoever really wants to know the Mangistau region is to visit the mountain Scherkala (means clustering Mountain Lion) and the surrounding desolate landscapes. Some think the mountain resembles a cup or a yurt. Sherkala is considered to be one of shrines of Mangystau.
The Karagie depression is the third deepest depression in the world at 132m below sea level. The formation of the depression has been connected with the process of lixiviation of saline rock, subsidence and karst processes, which took place on the coast of the Caspian Sea.
