Groningen
Groningen is one of the first settlement (1845) of Dutch farmers, now functioning as the chief town of the District of Saramacca. Coronie, also called the “coconut district, and Nickerie displays old wooden houses (not always maintained) and churches with the very charming original dutch architecture.
Coronie and Nickerie districts, as with most of Suriname, relies mostly upon agriculture for both its income and its food supply with many coconut and rice plantations mostly gained on rainforest in the last years.
