BELIZE - San Ignacio - Caracol and Xunantunich Mayan Ruins
San Ignacio is a town in western Belize with many touristic options (mayan sites, jungle, caves..). Xunantunich is an Ancient Maya archaeological site in western Belize, about 11 km (7 miles) west of San Ignacio, located atop a ridge above the Mopan River. It served as a Maya civic ceremonial centre to the Belize Valley region in the Late and Terminal Classic periods.
To arrive to Caracol (80 km or 50 miles from San Ignacio) you will cross the beautiful Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. Caracol is a Classic Period complex, it covers 30-square miles of thick, high-canopy jungle, and includes five plazas, an astronomic observatory and already 36,000 identified buildings.
The loftiest among them, a massive pyramid (Caana) which is capped by three temples and rises over 140 feet above the jungle floor.
