SENEGAL - Dakar - Gorée Island
Dakar is located on the Cap-Vert peninsula on the Atlantic coast and is the westernmost city on the African mainland. The population of the Dakar metropolitan area is estimated at 2.7 million. Following the abolition of the slave trade and French annexation of the mainland area in the 19th century, Dakar grew into a major regional port and a major city of the French colonial empire. Today, Dakar is the capital and largest city of Senegal.
The island of Gorée lies off the coast of Senegal, opposite Dakar. From the 15th to the 19th century, it was a slave-trading centre on the African coast. Ruled in succession by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French, its architecture is characterized by the contrast between the grim slave-quarters and the elegant houses of the slave traders. Today it continues to serve as a reminder of human exploitation and as a sanctuary for reconciliation.
