TUNISIA - Eastern Tunisia - Sousse - Kairouan - Monastir - El Jem - Djerba island
Sousse is located 140 km (87 mi) south of Tunis. The Medina of Sousse constitutes a harmonious archaeological complex that reflects Arabo-Muslim urbanism applied to a coastal town exposed through its history to piracy and dangers from the sea. Monastir is 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of Sousse. Traditionally a fishing port, Monastir is now a major tourist resort.
Djerba is a Tunisian island and the largest island of North Africa in the Gulf of Gabès. Citing the long and unique history of its Jewish minority in Djerba, Tunisia has sought UNESCO World Heritage status protections for the island.
Kairouan is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous for its large impressive Great Mosque. Don't forget a visit to the remarkable Mausoleum of Sidi Sahab, generally known as the Mosque of the Barber.
El Jem (or El Djem) is an Unesco World Heritage for its amphitheater built by the Romans around 238 and was mainly used for gladiator shows.
